Should You Buy a Secondhand Gas Hedge Trimmer?

!±8± Should You Buy a Secondhand Gas Hedge Trimmer?

Should you buy a used gas hedge trimmer? Generally when buying secondhand whether it be tools or appliances, there is normally no guarantee on them which means you can not take them back if they refuse to work. If you buy your used gas hedge trimmer from a chainsaw or lawnmower dealer, it may be have been traded in by the seller who has upgraded to a new model and the dealer may offer you a warranty with it and if you are lucky, it might have been fully serviced.

Where Can I Buy
For obvious reasons a dealer would be the best place to buy, they often have trade in units for sale and usually at a reduced price. Ask them if they will give you a warranty, a thirty day warranty will give you some peace of mind. Other places to search for secondhand gas hedge trimmers include the classified section of your newspaper, message boards at your local mall, also look at second hand goods stores and pawn shops - often these places are great for getting bargains.

You can also buy online, head over to your favorite search engine such as Yahoo or Google and look for secondhand or used gas hedge trimmers, also browse the listings on sites such as eBay. Amazon is well worth looking at, as often they will have refurbished units for sale with a warranty at a fraction of the cost of a new unit and quite often include free shipping.

What Do I Need To Look For
Take a close look at the condition and appearance, this will give you an indication of whether the owner has looked after the unit or not. Check the wear on the handles as this will quite often give you an idea of the age of the unit. Look a the make and model numbers - often an online search of those will give you an idea of the age of the tool and also any issues to be aware of with that particular model.

Inspect the blades closely, see if they have been correctly sharpened and the cutting angle of the blade is correct and not worn - also look for nicks in the blades. Dull or worn blades are dangerous and can cause the hedge trimmer to jam when in use.

Make sure the seller demonstrates the hedge trimmer working, check to make sure it starts easily, no more than one or two pulls on the chord with the choke engaged and the engine should start. If it does not start easily, it could mean issues such as spark problems or something more serious such as electronic ignition faults.

Test the blade lock mechanism if the tool has one fitted - with the blade lock activated the blades should not move and the engine should idle easily. Let the engine warm up first and then rev the engine, listening for strange noises and observing exhaust emissions. Two stroke engines do emit a bit of smoke, but this should not be excessive. Excessive smoke could be an indication of an incorrect fuel to oil mix or something more serious. Check the shutoff switches making sure they do in fact turn off the engine when engaged. Also check for any vibrations in the tool when running, most newer models have anti-vibration features built in.

Buying Considerations
What is the price of the second hand hedge trimmer - is it fair and relative to the age and condition of the machine? How does it compare to the price of a new one?

Always try and negotiate, you may be surprised, often people just really want to get rid of second hand items. Be also aware that you have no idea of the internal condition of the engine of the unit, you may buy it and two days after the purchase the engine may stop, requiring expensive repairs or replacement.

The home handyman range of gas hedge trimmers should give you 1 to 2 years of service and the commercial models 2 to 3 years of work before needing major repairs.

Another option you have when buying second hand (especially from some one local in your area) , ask if they mind you taking the hedge trimmer into your local chainsaw dealer who will give you a professional opinion and an idea of what you should be paying for the unit.

Remember buy carefully and happy trimming.

Choosing a Leaf Blower - Gas Or Electric?

!±8± Choosing a Leaf Blower - Gas Or Electric?

A leaf blower can make cleaning up after Fall leaves that much easier. Instead of raking, just flip the switch and the leaves are literally blown away by a blast of air. Tidying up a large yard was once an all day chore, but now takes no longer than your favorite show. When deciding on a leaf blower for your yard you will have to choose between two basic types. Learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of each type here.

Gas Leaf Blowers

Petrol powered leaf blowers are the original and are still strong sellers. They operate on gasoline or 2 cycle oil and are cordless and durable. These leaf blowing machines are made for function and are a bit heavier and more sturdy than their electric counterparts. Cost wise, you are likely to spend a bit more on this type of blower.

Who are they best for?

A gas powered leaf blower is best for people who have a large yard or need an industrial strength blower for their landscaping. If plugging in an extension cord is impractical for any reason, these are your best choice.

Electric Leaf Blowers

Today's electric leaf blowers are gaining in popularity. The first ones were not known for being exceptionally durable however today's models have come a long way in this department. These leaf blasters operate by plugging in to an extension cord and an outlet. They give off no emissions making them environmentally friendly. Lighter than their gas cousins, the electric powered models are easy to carry and easy to use. As far as the price goes, this type of leaf machine is generally less expensive with many good machines costing less than 0.

Who are they best for?

You would want to consider an electric blower if you have a smaller yard or live in an area that regulated emissions on yard equipment. For your average suburban yard, these blowers are a perfect solution. Many even offer variable speed settings so you can adjust the airflow as needed for the job.

The Best Weed Eaters

!±8± The Best Weed Eaters

When selecting a weed eater for your yard it is best to do a little research about the brand names that you will be choosing from. Many companies have reputations in power lawn equipment, some good and some bad, so its best to read up as much as you can to make sure that you are buying the best weed eater for your lawn.

Husqvarna calls itself the  "global leader in outdoor power equipment." Husqvarna is a Swedish company and claims to have sold more pieces of outdoor power equipment than any other company in the world. The company owns other brands of string trimmers including, Poulan Pro, Weed Eater, Yard Pro and builds equipment for Sears under the Craftsman name.

Husqvarna is the official lawn care and landscaping equipment of NASCAR. Husqvarna has three different levels of string trimmers for its customers. The first is Professional Landscape and Ground Care. These are the best string trimmers that are out there. Made especially for lawn care pros these trimmers can withstand intense trimming for long periods of time. The second level of string trimmers is Landowner.

This group of string trimmers are designed for landowners that have large properties and the trimmers here are in between commercial and residential use. They offer comfortable ergonomic support and great results in less time. This group is best for farm owners. The last group of string trimmers that Husqvarna offers is trimmers for home owners. These trimmers are some of the best string trimmers that a homeowner can buy. These string trimmers are efficient and easy handling, and many come with a detachable shaft for attachments. After using any Husqvarna String Trimmer in action it is easy to see that they are one of the best string trimmers made.

The next company to make the list of the best weed eaters around is Ryobi. Ryobi is a Japanese company that is a leader in power tools. Ryobi weed eaters come in many different shapes and sizes, including straight shaft and curved shaft weed eaters, 4-cycle and 2-cycle engines, wheeled weed eaters and edgers, and 17" and 18" cutting swaths. Ryobi has created what they call the "touch start" engine that uses electricity similar to a hybrid vehicle.

This new technology offers that power of a gas weed eater with the cost effectiveness and low emissions of an electric weed eater. A Ryobi weed eater makes a great weed eater for any home owners lawn arsenal. This is why we have included Ryobi as one of the best makers of weed eaters today.

Finally we are going to look at MTD Products who makes Troy-Bilt and Cub-Cadet weed wackers two of the biggest names in the industry. MTD products got started as the Modern Tool and Die company in the 1930's in Cleveland Ohio. Today they are one of Husqvarna greatest competitors world wide.
